Being Informed

The first step in creating change is to gain knowledge about the cause. Even if you are not going to be an architect or engineer, the number of bird deaths that are occurring cannot be ignored. By doing more research and understand the issue, not only will you be able to help solve the problem, but be able to gain the resources your need to spread the word.

Bird-Friendly Building Designs

Having birds in mind when designing structures will decrease the amount that die from the collisions. These methods are very easy and quick to carry out, requiring minimal work from the constructor. The specific measures can be taken to build bird-friendly structures include:

  1. Bird screens / netting

    • Many homes will have these to protect from bugs when they keep the door open. It can range from attractive fiberglass screens that hang loosely in front of a pane of glass or sliding door, providing a gentle cushion for birds that strike it to a simple netting However, this also serves as a protective barrier from birds when this is on high buildings. The birds are more likely to see the screen since it eliminates the problem of reflection that usually causes them to fly into a window. In the case that the bird still runs into the building, the screen provides a cushion so that the bird has a greater chance of surviving after the collision since it is not hitting the glass directly.

  2. Adhesive film on windows

    • Companies have sold films that go over glass with different patterns, opacities, and densities. Specifically, the Viking Stadium in Minnesota added this to reduce the amount of bird strikes that occurred. At FIU, paw-shaped decals could be put on the windows; these would not only be better for birds, but would also fit right in with school spirit. These decals are easy to install since they are simply applied and adhered to the windows. Even though it can be considered distracting by some individuals, this method is cost-friendly and relatively simply to install.

  3. Ultraviolet paint

    • Humans are not are not able to see UV light but this does not mean that birds can't! This method is advantageous since only birds can see this paint, however it is more costly and time-consuming.

  4. Noise alerts

    • Noise alerts can be utilized that release a noise for the birds to hear when they approach the window at a frequency that humans cannot hear. This allows the bird to move away from the glass when they hear this noise. The advantage to this method is that it is cost-effective, however it could be considered cruel to the birds that fly into this area.

Spreading the Word

After following the first step of being formed, it is time to get out there and spread the word. We believe the best way to solve the problem is for the community to actively get involved. Keep in touch with organizations. such as the American Bird Conservancy, start a conversation, donate to the cause, volunteer, speak to family or friends, call your representatives, or make the most out of social media. It does not matter if you are only in middle school or already retired because it is never too early or too late to create change.
