BIRD STRIKES IN FIU

Windows, or “ the invisible killer," have cost many birds' lives just this past year because of lack of preventable measures and the lack of awareness on the issue.  A survey conducted by a fellow FIU student shows that out of 80 students that are on their way to class, at least 75% have admitted to seeing a dead bird - making it more likely than not to encounter one every few days.  Further analysis indicates that they are usually seen close in proximity to windows. Students who attend the University of Florida have also witnessed the death of these birds claiming that the winged creatures are colliding with reflective glass.  Janine Sikes reports that just one day of survey she has witnessed seven deaths of birds at the same location because of these highly reflective windows. This is no coincidence. FIU emulates these highly reflective windows and glass ever present in all of their buildings. These birds are confusing open air with windows that are costing their life and , inadvertently, our pockets. Yet FIU poses a bigger threat than University of Florida as it in fact fosters one of the largest campuses across the nation. More buildings equals more deaths. These deaths are ultimately preventable if we choose to take action and give these miracles of nature a chance at life.
